There are two reasons I can think of right now not to have the preview window visible by default:

1. Might have (minor) performance implications, if you just want to do a quick search, you will be spending some CPU cycles reading the file and rendering its preview.

2. If your terminal window is not big enough, the main list will be competing for space with the preview window.

If those are not deal breakers for you, you can totally have the preview window visible by default.
